Navigating the Return to Employment After Maternity Leave: Balancing Career and Family

The decision to start a family marks a significant milestone in one's life journey. While for some, this decision aligns seamlessly with life's natural course, for many driven by their careers, the intersection of professional aspirations and family planning introduces complexities and uncertainties. Returning to employment after maternity leave presents a unique challenge as individuals strive to balance their career ambitions with their newfound roles as parents.

Fortunately, modern workplaces are increasingly recognising the importance of supporting employees through major life transitions, including the journey into parenthood. Forward-thinking companies invest in programs designed to help individuals strike a healthy balance between work and family, fostering a culture of support and inclusivity.

One such initiative gaining traction is maternity coaching - tailored form of support that guides individuals through the stages of pregnancy, maternity leave, and the eventual return to work. Maternity coaching offers numerous benefits, including regular check-ins to address concerns, provide emotional support, and equip individuals with the necessary tools to navigate this transformative period.

During maternity leave, these coaching sessions provide invaluable support, offering a safe space for new parents to share experiences, address fears, and plan for the future. Whether grappling with the demands of parenthood, adjusting to new routines, or contemplating the return to work, maternity coaching empowers individuals to navigate these challenges with confidence.

I offer maternity coaching which helps my clients re-enter the workforce and facilitate a smooth transition. I offer guidance on managing individualised work-life balance, setting realistic expectations, and prioritising self-care to help my clients return to work with clarity and confidence.

Some of the things I work on with my maternity returners revolve around being comfortable about protecting their own time, giving themselves much needed 'recharge' time, such as a walk in the fresh air, sitting and listening to some soothing music, or just being in their own mind and tuning in to how their body feels; paying attention to what’s coming up for them.

You may find that the ‘people pleaser’ within that needs to be left behind in order for you to move forward. When you let go of the need to please others, you can get clear  on your own needs and how you wish to return to work, knowing that things may have changed during your maternity leave.  Working on your sense of self and setting some boundaries will put you in a greater position to make informed choices which help balance your new priorities as a parent.

It’s important to mention that maternity coaching isn't exclusive to mothers; fathers who have taken time away from work to support their families can also benefit from these programs, which is why I welcome mums and dads into my coaching space.

From an employer's standpoint, investing in maternity coaching yields tangible benefits beyond employee retention. I work with organisations to help them retain experienced employees, which reduces recruitment costs and promotes a positive work environment conducive to productivity and innovation.

“I started coaching shortly after returning to work from maternity leave and was not disappointed by Aly's skill in helping me detangle the "mess" I often felt being overwhelmed by all my responsibilities.” ~ Titi
