Are You Sabotaging Your Own Career? 5 Questions to Find Out
We all have this in common: navigating our careers can be challenging, and sometimes, the biggest obstacles come from within ourselves. If you’re feeling stuck or unfulfilled in your professional life, it may be time to reflect on whether you’re inadvertently sabotaging your own progress. Here are five questions to help you gain clarity and identify any self-sabotaging behaviours.
1. Am I thinking in a fearful way?
Fear can be a powerful barrier to career progression. Consider whether you’re restricting yourself with negative thoughts about fear of failure, rejection, or change that then determine the actions you take. Ask yourself: What’s stopping me from taking the next step in my career? Recognising these fears may be the first step toward coming up with a plan that reduces the size or the way you may be viewing them.
2. How do I approach taking risks?
Staying in your own familiar and comfortable place, may be your job, your company, your knowledge and skill set. It can also stifle your growth, limit your learning and keep you where you are. Reflect on your willingness to take risks. Are you passing up opportunities for fear of making the wrong choice? Consider this: When was the last time I stepped outside my comfort zone? Taking steps towards making calculated risks can lead to new learning experiences and new opportunities.
3. Am I Engaging in Negative Self-Talk?
Have you noticed the way you speak to yourself, is it in a positive and uplifting way or is it full of self doubt and negativity? The narrative you decide to practice within your own self talk can significantly impact your confidence and motivation. Negative self-talk can undermine your achievements and create self-doubt. Reflect on this question: What ‘stories’ do I tell myself about my abilities and potential? Identifying and challenging negative thoughts can empower you to shift your mindset toward a more positive and productive outlook.
4. Am I Focusing on Others Instead of Myself?
While collaboration and teamwork are essential, constantly prioritising others over your own goals can lead to career stagnation. Ask yourself: Am I putting my needs and aspirations aside to please others? It’s important to strike a balance between supporting colleagues and advocating for your own career development.
5. Am I Resisting Change?
Change is an inevitable part of any career journey. However, resisting change can prevent you from seizing new opportunities or adapting to evolving circumstances. Reflect on this question: How do I typically respond to change in my work environment? Embracing change with an open mind can lead to growth and new possibilities.
Self-sabotage can often be subtle, it has probably been a habit that you have been practicing for quite a while.
